South Africa

A budget app that fits how South Africa spends

South African budgeters are almost entirely ignored by the big international budgeting apps. Cash Compass works in rand, tracks cash as easily as card, and never asks to connect to your bank.

Apple-native · No bank logins · iCloud sync

Why this fits

Why South African budgeters pick Cash Compass

1

The major apps don't cover South Africa

Copilot Money, Monarch and Rocket Money serve US accounts, and YNAB's automatic import doesn't extend to South African banks. If you budget in South Africa you are doing manual entry regardless of what you subscribe to, so the sensible move is choosing an app built for it. Cash Compass tracks spending from Standard Bank, FNB, Capitec or a wallet of cash with no difference in handling.

2

ZAR throughout, including exports

Choose ZAR at setup and every dashboard figure, chart axis, share card and CSV export uses rand. Cash Compass reads every ISO currency, so there's no assumption of a dollar-based user, and switching currency later never rewrites what you've already recorded. Charts group by the categories you create rather than a fixed US-centric list.

3

Cash spending is a first-class case

Cash remains a meaningful part of everyday spending in South Africa — taxis, informal traders, market purchases — and it is invisible to any bank feed by definition. An app that depends on statement import structurally cannot see that money. Logging it in a few seconds at the point of spending is the only way it ends up in the total, which is precisely the workflow Cash Compass optimises.

How it works

Three taps from blank screen to budget

  1. 1. Capture

Voice, photo of a receipt, or 3-tap manual entry — every method takes under 5 seconds.

  2. 2. Categorize

Cash Compass picks the category automatically. Override once and it learns your pattern.

  3. 3. Review

Weekly chart shows where money went. Adjust caps before the month is over, not after.

FAQ

Common questions

Does it work with South African banks?

There's no connection to any bank, so Standard Bank, FNB, Absa, Nedbank and Capitec are all equally supported. You record spending yourself by voice, receipt photo or manual entry, which also captures cash that no feed would see.

Can I use rand?

Yes — ZAR is selected at setup or changed later in Settings, and totals, charts and exports all use it. Every ISO currency is supported if you earn or spend in another.

Does it work without a data connection?

Manual entry works fully offline, which matters where data is expensive or patchy. Voice and receipt scanning need a connection because they're processed remotely, and premium iCloud sync catches up when you reconnect.

What does it cost?

Manual logging is free permanently and ad-free. Premium adds unlimited voice and receipt capture, full charts, CSV export and iCloud sync, priced in rand by the App Store with a 14-day free trial on the annual plan.

Built native for iPhone, iPad, and Mac with iCloud sync. Works offline.

Privacy-first.
