Japan

A budget app for Japan that sees your cash spending

Japan mixes heavy cash use with IC cards like Suica, and no Western budgeting app connects to a Japanese bank. Cash Compass works in yen, in Japanese, and records cash as easily as card.

Why this fits

Why budgeters in Japan pick Cash Compass

1

Cash and IC cards are invisible to feeds

Cash use in Japan remains high by developed-market standards, and Suica or PASMO top-ups obscure what the money was actually spent on even when a card was involved. Any app relying on bank import is structurally unable to tell you that ¥600 went on lunch. Cash Compass records what you tell it, so cash, IC card and credit spending all land in the same categories and totals.

2

Yen and a Japanese interface

Choose JPY at setup and every figure, chart axis and CSV export uses yen — including whole-yen amounts without forced decimal places, since the app formats according to the currency you pick. Japanese is one of 33 translated languages and is set independently of currency, so a Japanese interface with yen amounts is a standard configuration.

3

No Japanese bank connections exist anyway

Copilot Money, Monarch and Rocket Money are US-account products, and YNAB's automatic import doesn't reach MUFG, Mizuho, SMBC or Japan Post Bank. Since manual entry is unavoidable in Japan regardless of the app, the sensible criterion is capture speed — and speaking an expense as you leave the konbini is about as fast as tracking gets.

How it works

Three taps from blank screen to budget

  1. 1. Capture

Voice, photo of a receipt, or 3-tap manual entry — every method takes under 5 seconds.

  2. 2. Categorize

Cash Compass picks the category automatically. Override once and it learns your pattern.

  3. 3. Review

Weekly chart shows where money went. Adjust caps before the month is over, not after.

FAQ

Common questions

Does it connect to Japanese banks?

No. Cash Compass has no bank connections in any country, so MUFG, Mizuho, SMBC and Japan Post Bank are all supported equally — you log spending rather than importing statements.

Does it handle yen correctly?

Yes. Selecting JPY formats amounts, charts and exports according to yen conventions rather than forcing a two-decimal US format. Every ISO currency is supported if you also spend abroad.

Is the app in Japanese?

Yes, Japanese is among the 33 translated languages, and language is chosen separately from currency, so a Japanese interface with yen amounts works out of the box.

Can it track cash spending?

That's a core strength in Japan. Cash purchases are logged by voice or a few taps and appear in the same charts as card spending — something no statement-import app can achieve, since the money never appears in a feed.
